New Art, A DIY Light Fixture, & Some Furniture Shuffling

Jul 23, 2012 16:24

When last I posted, back in February, some wonderful person left a comment suggesting a new furniture arrangement in the living room. I'm a little embarrassed to admit I hadn't ever considered a different arrangement! We used to keep a TV on the credenza, so the couch kind of had to be oriented that way, plus the old couch was too huge to go ( Read more... )

I covet your coffee table. Go ahead and tell me you bought it for $50 at a flea market. Man I hate living in LA all the damm hipsters take call the good stuff.

Nope, it's this one, but I couldn't find it for sale anywhere anymore (anywhere in the first 5 or so Google results, that is, I didn't try super hard). However it was way more than $50--I too coveted it (for years), and then some delightful people chipped in on it as a wedding gift. I'm so grateful, of course, but I do feel it turned out to be overpriced for the quality!

Oh man. I have a light fixture just like your (previously) ugly one in the apartment I'm moving into this fall, and I spent all day scouring Apartment Therapy for a remedy. I love what you did, and can't wait to replicate it!

Oh, nice! It was super easy, only took a few hours once I'd corralled all the materials. Perfect for an apartment, too, since it's not permanent!

The furniture is dreamy. We bought a mid-century ranch last year and I've been on a search for great pieces from that time. We live in Portland (too? Can't tell by your LJ) so there are lots of vintage shops that carry pieces but way too expensive. I need to go back home to the 'burbs and go to an estate sale to find stuff cheap, I guess!

We're in Atlanta--I've been lucky on Craigslist a couple of times & there's a great vendor at an antique mall outside the city...and the Barcelona chairs are hand-me-downs from my dad. The couch is new, from Room & Board, but it definitely fits!

I could live there! It's so lovely and comfortable looking!

I love what you've done with the wall art, all of it! Why did I never think to hang pictures on a curved line? Very cool.

did you paint your molding white? i know that it's a hot topic and i'm leaning towards painting mine. we have a 1919 craftsman with original molding throughout the house. it's all painted white, except the front living and dining rooms. we have great built-ins like you do and yours are GORGEOUS painted white. it really stands out against the paint colors. people think i'm crazy but if 90% of the molding is already painted white, why not have the front rooms match?

It was painted when I bought the house and I'm secretly (or not) rather glad. It's a tough choice since it's so hard to undo...intact wood molding can be really beautiful, but I like bold wall colors, clearly, and I love how the white trim keeps it light. It's hard to have to be the one to make that move though! If most of your house is already painted, I'd lean towards going for it, too.
