I've spent the last few evenings over at WRFA, because Wolverine/Rogue are still one of my OTPs after all these years. As you say, what happens in canon - the actors and their chemistry (or lack of it in particular) can mean that no 'ship dynamic is gold-plated.

I think your point about power is a big one when we're talking about pairings where there's an age difference and there's a minor for me. Even in the (few) pairings that I 'ship that I'd label 'dysfunctional', the power balance is pretty equal.
