I know many are avoiding LJ in case of being spoiled ... but if a few of you are still checking in over the next day or two, here's something I'm curious about
( Read more... )
I'll probably read it as quickly as possible, speeding to the end. Then, once the suspense is over, I'll go back to the beginning and read it more carefully. Unless I hate the ending, in which case I'll hurl it across the room and not come back to it for a couple of days.
I'm carefully avoiding the pdf scans doing the rounds at the moment.
I often read the last page first, or skim thru, or at least check out the chapter titles. This time I'm not doing any of those things. I'm going to read from beginning to end with no peeking. It will be the first book I haven't spoiled myself on.
As for speed, I'm what most people would call a slow reader. I read at about the same pace as you would hear it if reading aloud to someone. It's like telling the story to myself, and I retain it better and notice more detail that way.
ITA on Snapecast - it was great. Btw, save me a seat at the next Snape Bereavement support group. I will bring the booze.
When I'm deciding whether to buy a book, I open it at random and skim through a few pages to see if I like the feel of the writing. Never yet, though, have I previewed the end. It feels jinxed. Who was it said something like--"I read the end first in case I die before I finish the book"? Could be, if I read the end first ... boom!
The Snape Bereavement group sounded like a hoot, yet with some rather poignant comments about the fandom. For those coming to Prophecy, I'm sure many of us will gather informally in various discussion /support groups! Toronto's bars will likely be inundated.
I will devoured it first, then re read it slowly. In fact, I'll turn 37 on Friday, I told the kids my birthday gift will be to be allowed to read in peace.
Well, I'll be stuck at home until the post office shows up with my copy from amazon. I'll have booted up the computer and launched Skype. A couple of my fellow travelers from "Who Killed Albus Dumbledore" are going to try 3-way conferenceing as we work our way through it, at least until our varying reading speeds get us too far out of sync.
I figure that I will manage to make a pretty good dent in it before I get to bed, if I go to bed that night (I probably will. I'm a bit too old to be pulling an all-nighter). I'll be out much of SUnday with friends who are coming up from San Diego.
Once the story starts engaging me I'll probably flip to the back and read the ending, take the pressure off, and then settle down to watch how the characters get there.
Dear J ... Like you, I'll be stuck at home on Saturday am, waiting for Amazon to deliver (please god) in the early pm. I've decided to spend the morning continuing to prep my Prophecy workshop--may as well put the wait-time to good use.
But I'm the solitary fan in my family and immediate RL circle, so I'm intrigued by your plan to read collaboratively and share your thoughts as you go along. Much as I'm going to savour reading the book alone, I'll also appreciate the social part: discussing and dissecting it within this community and at Prophecy.
BTW, I meant to let you know much earlier that I very much enjoyed listening to your interview on Snapecast # 18!
Thanks! I wish she had given me the questions in a different order, since the answers from one would have flowed into the next moe smoothly if she had reversed at least a couple of them. But it didn't go that badly, adn the computer (which had a failing power supply) didn't reboot in the middle and make us have to start over, at least.
I have a pretty lousy voice for broadcasting but then, I knew that.
You know, I saw this post yesterday and was thinking of a response. I initially planned to savor the book. But I'm getting so anxious now that I'm not sure I'll be able to do that. I think I'll tear through the book despite myself. And I once swore I'd never look at the last chapter first, but who knows, by the time I get my hands on the book (Monday for me ... I'll be at a wedding in California this weekend), I may have lost my conviction. ;-D
If you have to wait 'til Monday to read, I can completely understand why you'd want to check out the end first, so you won't be completely spoilt (even by accident). OTOH, you could sneak a copy to the wedding and sit in the very back of the church reading it. I'm sure no one will notice ... ;- )
Now I'm starting to wonder how long (or whether) all my intentions to"savour" the book will last.

I'm now beginning to wonder if I'll be able to stop myself from speeding up as I get nearer to the end, like a train out of control.
