Cardini invented the image of what people think of when they imagine a "magician". The coat and top hat were his trademarks. He was a WWI veteran and a mustard gas surviver. He went on to be one of the premier performers of Vaudeville. I've heard his voice never fully recovered so he invented this silent "drunken magician" act to cover for it
