I had my first cadaver day in my anatomy lab today. It was actually REALLY neat! There is just so much to learn. I am excited though, it should be a really interesting class...it is my favorite, I do look forward to it every week ( Read more... )

Wow. And by 'wow' I mean EEEEEEEWWWW.

Was it -- a person? You know what I mean -- did it seem like a person to you? Because I've often heard dead bodies aren't like people, that there's something just not there.

Did you do the whole american indian thing and thank the soul for the use of it's body? (I used to try to be mindful in this way whenever I ate meat.)

Well, it was not a person. It was just a body. These cadavers are already dissected and so they don't have any skin on their faces. I know this sounds like it would make it worse but it actually makes it better: it is the skin and color of person that we recognize, with out that they just look like models.

Actually, I am very much a "thank the departed soul" type of person. I do appreciate those that aren't too squimish to donate their bodies to science and I hope that someone will appreciate the token when it is my body on that table. Our TAs actually reminded us that we aren't allowed to name them or anything because we are supposed to be respectful to them because of who they used to be.
