So apparently my unit ultimately is part of XVIII Airborne Corps at Ft. Bragg, an active-duty corps. Interesting. Now I understand why I got more money to join this unit. It's an Airborne unit. I know James will not really care much about this, I just find it intersting that out of all the units in GA, including the 121st, I have apprently joined ( Read more... )

will they give you an airborne school slot, or will you be one of the many nasty, dirty legs who are part of the increasingly inaccurately-named XVIII Airborne Corps? (I mean, the 101st and the 10th Mountain are part of that corps, and they're leg units, so WTF)

No, I'll get a slot. I know what you're talking about with it, though. There are a LOT of units that fall under the XVIII Corps but aren't really Airborne. The 214th is made up of three main artillery weapons systems: Towed Howitzers, Paladin Armored Howitzers, and guided-missile systems. Obviously the Paladins aren't inserted by air (the other cannons and systems can be... sort of), but the entire unit is supposed to be Airborne-qualified.

At least the 101st has Air Assault. It can be connected... kind of. Mountain School? I don't see any real connection to airborne operations and mountain warfare. In fact, mountains and parachutists don't seem to mix. Is there some connection I'm too stupid to see?

they're really only still called the 10th Mountain b/c of tradition. I've met people (including one of my drill sergeants) who have been stationed at Ft. Drum, and they've said they really don't do any more mountain training than other units.

as for the connection with jumping out of planes, I have no clue either.
