I always used to be bothered that as a lapsed Catholic who has my own sense of faith and God not contained by an organized religion, how people who claimed to be religious knew so little of any of the other religions, and almost none had read any of their holy texts, like the Book of Mormon, the Bakhivad-Gita, or the Koran

I love the SPLC and have been a supporter of theirs for years.

Having grown up in a Fundie household, this makes sense. A lot of these groups are half a step away from being cults (I believe the one I grew up in meets the sociological definition of a cult, but I digress) The goal of a cult is to *prevent* it's members from thinking as opposed to encouraging you to think and analyze.

The *last* thing they want their flocks of fat, bloated sheep to do is to read the bible and think on their own. I bet if you drill down what you'll find is that these folks know key passages that support the ideology of their particular sect. Sadly, the people who thump the Bible the most are the ones who understand it in all of its richness the least.
