Our town is allowed to display Christmas trees, but not Nativity scenes, because that's a religious symbol. OK, fine. No religion for the holiday, because God forbid someone whould be offended

I think the difference here is that these religious symbols are not naturally occuring. You can't walk past a region of undeveloped land and see a forest of menorah. When you look up in the sky, not every star twinkles back with six evenly-spaced points. And last I checked "pagan" was not a religion, just a word used to describe someone who wasn't Christian (or at the very least monotheistic).
Okay, couner argument aside I think that people should be allowed to decorate their homes and property as they see fit. Don't like it? Don't look! Or move somewhere that affords less freedoms and guarantees you a xenophobic life with precious little differentiation where your small mind won't have to deal with just how diverse this ball of dirt really is.
I think my favorite part out of all of this is that Christ was not born in December.
