Somehow, it wasn't the water that woke her. Possibly because while she was lying half-submerged when the waves rolled in, it was her lower half, and her armor was (for a while, anyway) effectively waterproof. Either way, she could've ignored the water. But even unconscious, Shepard was hard-wired to know when she wasn't alone, and as she opened her eyes to the setting sun, she knew that this was one such time ( ... )

Of course 'for now'. It was always 'for now', enough so that Shepard didn't really feel the need to repeat it again. It was just... a given. If things were a little more fortunate for him, good on him. From the experienced way he held his pistol, though, she sorely doubted it.

While he was taking a moment to rest, she was heading a little bit farther in. Just a few steps, and warily. They definitely weren't alone.

Stephen took a look at Shepard, pushing off the wall and looking in the opposite direction. His instinct usually told him not to risk splitting up, but Shepard seemed like a woman who could take care of herself. Someone with a cautious head on her shoulders. He was fiddling with the phone from his pocket. It wasn't his, that much was clear.

"I think we should find out what we're dealing with here. Do some exploration of the area. Doesn't look like it's as empty as I expected, but it's not much friendlier looking in here." He let his glance travel back to Shepard. "I don't normally suggest this but I think it might be wiser for us to split up, cover more ground? We can meet back up later, see what we've figured out about what's going on."

She wasn't going too far yet. Not nearly far enough for him to lose sight of her, just a few steps so she could better see what they were getting themselves into. She had the sense not to abandon her only ally in a place like this.

As he started to speak again, she turned back to face him. He made a good suggestion. A planned parting of ways was an entirely different matter than running off recklessly, anyway. "I'll take this way." Shepard nodded toward a door to her left, the closest of the various directions for them to explore.

She reached into a storage pocket in her armor and pulled out a phone. It wasn't her phone, but it had been on her when she'd woken up, so it must have been the communications device the message had been talking about. Shepard held it up for him to see. "You've got one?" But she'd seen him fiddling with it, so he didn't really have to answer. "Then if we don't run into each other, you'll know how to reach me. It's Shepard, by the way."

"Stephen." His response is almost automatic, the moment she states her name. "Hart." He nodded in agreement, waving his own phone casually. "I'll take the other direction. Stay out of trouble, yeah? I'd hate to find out I made the wrong choice so quickly." He hoped she didn't take the comment the wrong way. He had faith in her from what he'd seen so far. It was just Stephen's odd way of telling her he actually cared whether she survived or not. He didn't wait to find out, though. Feeling talks were never his specialty. He was gone through a different door in the next few moments, heading in the opposite direction.
