Ah! Thank you-- been there yourself?

(Still have never read DHL. I hang my head in deep shame...)

i have. went there on first new year's after beth's death. it was very, very deep. i sat in georgia o'keefe's chair under the pine. it was all completely open, and unattended. (i hear someone stole the chair!)

you should read d.h. - he goes deep into the heart, when he's not being brittle or shrill. his late writing is almost incomparable in its ease - and his letters are wonderful.

Thank you for mentioning D.H. Lawrence vis a vis New Mexico. "The Woman Who Rode Away" still gives me chills.

The New Mexican Southwest is really amazing. Canyon de Chelley in Arizona is wonderful, Carlsbad Caverns is stunning, Mesa Verde is brilliant, Chaco Culture is engaging and remote... You could spend a long time in that region.

It's worth spending some time in Southwestern Utah on the way there or back. Zion, Bryce, and Capitol Reef National Parks are all worth the visit, and the drives between them are some of my favorite countryside in the world.

I was very much hoping you'd read this and respond. I knew you've done a lot of exploring of the type I haven't gotten around to yet, so thank you for these starting points in my research.

Again, so tempting...

For those of us who shouldn't be doing long-distance driving (at least alone), do you think Amtrak's an option for planning a trip to NM that includes those Utah parks too?

Every summer my family would go on a multi-week driving trip. Our biggest took us all the way to Missouri, but usually we'd focus a bit more tightly. I've been to nearly every National Park and National Monument in the western third of the US ( ... )

I spent a summer living in Santa Fe and have been through Arizona and NM on numerous road trips. Also feel free to ask my mom -- she knows the area better than I do.
