No maps for these territories

I was introduced to a very new idea this past week, by both the therapist and by people I love and respect. A very powerful idea.

There is more than one way to meet your needs.

Deceptively simple, it sounds. But the power is in the effects; what this concept confronts.

Those "ways" to meet needs are really the strategies. And strategies can ( Read more... )

These are all good observations. Especially this one,

As I move through life and all its peaks and valleys, I'm wholly responsible for keeping myself running well. Meeting my needs is not a race, it's not a competition, it is not bound by rigid rules, and no one is running an awards ceremony with photographers and press and medals and glorious speeches.

... which many people seem to take as a serious personal afront.

Sure. I'm one of those people.

But one of the things that cutting a path through a thicket entails is that there might not be any witnesses at all, except yourself. That the shape of the path will be determined by how far you can swing, just enough for you to pass through. And sometimes, the overgrowth will be so dense as to block the sun.

And it's those moments of darkness where you summon all the love, the grace, the faith, the wisdom of experience that your memory has kept tucked away for moments just like this one.

And even if the climate denies you water, all those insignificant little dewdrops you've gathered throughout your life serves as your wellspring.

I say, that's a whole lot better than flashbulbs and headlines.
