I agree that cell phones are often relied upon instead of land line subscriptions, but I foresee Skype and similar competitors in the field of communications* will enable plenty of free or nearly free methods to sidestep the usual less flexible (local) system, that soon the MyWiFi, portable virtual networks, and those services available to smart-device owners, like on Kindle, will lead to the demise of the land line even sooner.

*these include Logitech, Gmail and other online audio/visual calls plus and SMS messaging, chat lines, Trillian and other social networking services
