So, I'm going to buy a new computer (maybe not for another six months, but still). And I know I want a mac (ooo mac, pretty, beth want...) Here's my delima. I can spend 1000 bucks and get an ibook (pretty....... ) or I can take the cheaper route, use my existing keyboard/moniter/etc. and get a mac mini for 500 bucks (or probably the one with ( Read more... )

your current monitor sucks. and i think your keyboard and mouse are both ps/2, so you'll have to replace those, at least, if they are. and maybe your monitor, too. it would be advised, at any rate ( ... )

I have never once in my life bought technology just because of something like "ooo mac, pretty, beth want". All of the software used for my preofession is designed for macs. And I just find them to be more agreeable machines.

ok, good. i won't have to damage your fragile body. :)

as a note, they just put up new mac minis that use Intel chips rather than PPCs, starting at $600 (maybe less for students?), so that may change my recommendation, once i get a chance to look at it and such.

also, i'm planning on posting an entry regarding Vista tonight, so you may want to take a looksee at that, too. especially given your 6 month outlook.

So, here I am offering my own [possibly unsolicited] humble opinion, which is based largely on the fact that my dad is a major Mac person (and I'm a nosy person). I love the ibook, personally. It's fantastic. However, just *today*, Mac released a new mini which can potentially be partitioned to run both Vista (as per the computer god's post above) and OS X, with shared RAM, which could be helpful depending on programs you need to run, etc. His gut instinct says the mini will be more powerful, more helpful, and an all-around better bet for a student. Unless, of course, you'd rather have the mobility of the ibook. Hope that helps :)

...and by "his gut instinct" I mean my dad's. Sorry.

Let me comment on the Vista potentiality--
It does exist. XP isn't likely to see any use on an intel mac (at least not without some major modifications, though there's money in it for someone who succeeds), since the macs use EFI instead of a traditional BIOS, and the 32 bit version of XP predates EFI, and the macs aren't 64 bit (silly Apple). Vista will support EFI, so it'll really be dependant on whether 1) Apple makes good on its promise to no block Vista from booting on their hardware, 2) Whether MS tries to prevent Vista from booting on Apple hardware, and/or 3) How many hacks you want to make to your Vista boot ( ... )
