My mom has gout in her foot. I don't know how bad that is, or really what causes it, but I imagine the fact that she's diabetic probably has something to do with it.

Gout is the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints. It is extremely painful and, if left untreated, can cause the joints to breakdown as with most any other arthritis. Indocin (indomethacin) is the most commonly prescribed medication for it. One of the gals in my office also has it.
It has nothing to do with diabetes. It tends to run in families. I cannot recall at this moment (5 am) what causes it, but I know that certain foods can trigger it.
