A brief break in my non-posting to report a priceless cultural clash. :)
Preface: Live screenings of Rocky Horror Picture Show are a rolicking, toast-throwing good time, with a deeply-carved niche in cinematic pop culture. "Odd" would be a pale term for the movie itself, but I would recommend the interactive experience to all who appreciate pure, nonsensical fun - and possess an open mind. :) Two aspects relevant to my story: various "witticisms" shouted at the screen, and a scene featuring some strange, crazy-haired folks in tuxedo-esque suits, doing a little number called the "Time Warp."
Tonight, I attended a tech rehearsal of Rossini's L'Italiana In Algeri, our season's final production. People, this show is CRAZY...an opera buffa three-ring circus...brilliantly performed by our cast, but Wisconsin has nothing on this cheese. And I, dear friends, am the authority on cheese in all its forms.
But I digress...
I was speaking with a certain member of our tech department when our male chorus, portraying Italian sailors, trotted onstage wearing tux coats over their sailor-garb, plus red stringy wigs, black hats, and red clown noses. Leaning toward my friend, I wondered aloud, "What is this, Rocky Horror?" We then, under our breaths, proceeded to yell classic Rocky Audience Participation lines at the stage. ("Janet!" *insert any Brad nickname* "That man has no freaking neck!!")
No one heard us...and no one could understand why we were snorting with laughter. :)
