3. I like my books to look as if they have never been read. No matter how many times I have read a book or how long I have owned it, I hate to see that inevitable line in the middle of the spine. The only exception is my Bible.

THE STORY OF MY LIFE! When I was living in the Cov House, I loaned Beth Thomas a book and she bent the spine. The fact that this happened in '98 and I still remember it shows my dorkiness.

Funny, I'm the exact opposite. Pristine books, at least in someone's home library make me sad. It means they haven't been read over and chewed on and really loved on. I have one book on my shelf that I haven't had time to even take out of the celophane yet and I have to stop myself from opening it up and easing in the spine (that's what one of our teachers called it in school when she had us break in new books). Books that are still readable but with thoughtful notes written in the margins are even better.

I actually find the detail that when John Lennon's killer was caught he had a dog-eared copy of "Catcher in the Rye" a romantic element in a tragic incident.
