A little-known factoid about me: I tried to sign up for the Air Force when I was 18. I pretty much aced the ASVABs, and the recruiter really wanted me, but I was 20 lbs overweight. So I didn't eat for a week. Since I worked as a waitress at the time, that was a real challenge, but I dropped 10 lbs. Recruiter still said nope. Actually what he said ( Read more... )

The most important political lesson learned from the Viet Nam debacles was to use people society at large isn't interested in for cannon fodder instead of people whose complaining is heard.
Did you catch the news item the other day that half (yeah, yeah, "45%". poetic license) the veterans of Bush's wars have applied for disability for shell shock?
I really didn't feel good about "Memorial Day".

I think the shell shock disability is so large a percentage because the insurance finally admits there is such a diagnosis. And thanks, btw, for the odd compliment :)

I hate that people think wars are necessary. I hate that friends and family and strangers and people from other nations have died in our wars. I hate the need for a Memorial Day. But I like remembering why I despise war.
