The day of Yamamoto’s retirement was the day of Gokudera’s death. The Rain Guardian, at fifty-six, had lived through enough. He didn’t give notice, didn’t pack up his room at base or drop a note to Vongola Eleventh (Tsuna’s daughter), simply walked out and didn’t look back.
He showed up at Gokudera’s funeral, where people looked at him funny because for the first time in thirty-five years, he wasn’t dressed in a suit. He came in a sushi chef’s apron, his hands stinking of fish even as he held the bouquet of white lilies. But once he got to Gokudera’s coffin, he wouldn’t budge. He turned to the spectators.
“I want to bury his coffin in my backyard.” He spoke loudly enough that a hush spread throughout the crowd.
After a moment, Tsuna’s daughter stood and walked up to confront him. “Yamamoto Takeshi.” she stated. “You left.”
“And I’m not coming back.”
“If you aren’t part of the Famiglia, why should I give you our former Storm Guardian’s remains?”
“Because I loved him. Because he loved me.”
“Gokudera Hayato loved many people, including my father. I’ve planned to have him interred beside Vongola Tenth after this service.”
Yamamoto set his jaw.
“Gokudera Hayato loved me like he loved no one else.”
“That’s not exactly a high endorsement-”
“He loved me more than he loved anyone else.”
Vongola Eleventh raised an eyebrow. “Gokudera Hayato had a wife, until the event of her death five years ago. They’d been married for more than two decades before that. He loved her more than he loved anyone else-”
“He would’ve chosen me.” Yamamoto insisted, laying a hand on the coffin. A tear slipped down his cheek, but he didn’t seem to notice - he’d been this miserable for a long time before he dared to show it. “Gokudera would’ve, but he loved the Family more, because I was part of the Family a-and other people were part of the Family so of course that love was stronger. There were just…more people. So he married for the Family. But he loved me.”
“You should be glad that Gokudera Hayato didn’t have children.” said Vongola Eleventh. “Otherwise, you would be making a scene in front of them. Stop this, Yamamoto.”
“No.” Yamamoto shook his head. “I’m taking him home with me, or…or I’m climbing into the coffin with him. Either way.” He shrugged his shoulders, his face twisting into a bitter smile. “We’ll waste away together.”
