The professors always want to see their students SOAR--go "make something of themselves." (Or insert another word that applies.) But there's nothing wrong for potentially trading in "real theatre work" for financial security and a job that's still in your field. Plus there are the other things you've listed.
Follow your heart, dearest. Yes, it sucks to know that people are talking about you and disapproving of the decisions you have made, but it's your life, not theirs. You know what you want, and financial security is nothing to laugh at, particularly if you have a goal in mind to work toward with said financial security. You're strong enough to take some gossip; you know in your heart what is best for you. It's not like you're giving up, so don't think of it that way. And there's absolutely no shame in wanting to keep the things that you cherish most, such as your cat and a blossoming relationship. As long as you know that the plan is to eventually get out of Cape and you save and work toward that goal, you're still doing just fine, no matter what anyone says to the contrary.
