Do I WANT Jesus?

I was talking with one of my best friends about another one of our best friends, who hasn't been such a best friend lately.  They both go to UVA.  She was saying that our friend has changed in a good way.  She's become less... uppity because she had an epiphany about God- that we're supposed to love him and love others, not impose that on other ( Read more... )

I feel like religion is something we all kind of "do" naturally, kind of like we "do" language or whatever. People tell you things and you assimilate them and then they may or may not ever show up again in what you believe/practice... I don't know if I'm really making any sense. I guess I just kind of feel like there's a huge gap between practicing religion and having religion, even though they can relate closely to each other. I also think questions are more important than answers... no wonder I was a bad sunday school student.

(I kind of like the deadbeat dad analogy, though. I think I see God as less deadbeat and more just distant, but it works.)

This reminds me of a discussion I had with my best friend Catie about people being religious versus people being spiritual, and how sometimes it's hard to find both in a single person. You have people who will think about religion a lot and go to church because they feel obligated and will follow the rules because they feel they should - religious. This in opposition to those people who seem to ever be seeking some understanding of what people can't understand, seeking some higher meaning or sense of the divine or well... spirituality in their lives. We wondered if the religious people were really getting much out of religion besides having something to lord over other people (which seems counter Jesus). And who wants that ( ... )

"I've had a hard time getting passed this feeling that religion is something I'm supposed to do. And I don't know if it will ever be anything that I want to do."

Now, I'm probably biased because I'm not particularly religious... but based on this, maybe you should look in to different religions, or different denominations? Maybe one would spark your inspiration more than others? I get inspired every once in a while to learn about religions and see if there's one particular one out there for me... but I usually get overwhelmed with it all because it's all so unknowable. I'm not very helpful, I know. =P
