Seeing the cover of Season 10 Issue 28 again this week, while I searched for images to work on, brought back an onslaught of feelings. I remember thinking: of all the men in Buffy's life, Spike, surely Spike, would never turn his back on Buffy, especially when they finally decided to give the two of them another chance.

When a couple face each other, they're signifying with their body language a willingness to work things out with their other half. It's a conciliatory position, a hopeful position. At any given time, they could look into each other's eyes and embrace, and any obstacles in their relationship would be overcome. When two people are turned away from each other, it's just the opposite.

I imagined Buffy's heartbreak at the eventual breakup (at the time of Issue 28 preview, I was both distraught and resigned at their unavoidable, final split), so unexpected, so gut-wrenching:

Broken heart to broken heart
The distance between us when
You turn your back on me
Spans the entire earth
