When he speaks, the flame flickers, acknowledges his impact on the world. But when he's silent, it ignores him. If you couldn't see him in front of you, if perhaps you were looking at him and at the flame, silent in a mirror, you wouldn't know he was there at all.
Impossible, that Spike should have so little significance for such a tiny thing as a candle. He's so huge in your world. So much the secret lover, the trusted confidant who didn't bring you back to hell, the warrior who understands your darkness. How can the flame not respond?
You can't stand to see the flame unmoved by him. So you blow it out. Then it's just the two of you, equal in the dark together.
