Setting in-canon, Smashed, just before they meet the last time in the ep
He wonders what it would be like. To have her full focus. When kissing him isn’t a dare, or an escape, or a distraction from the unbearable.
It won’t ever happen. He knows this. Whenever she looks at him, it’s through a distorting lens. He’s the enemy. He’s the bad guy. He’s not her friend. He is her friend, her faithful Greyfriars Bobby, mourning on her tombstone once she was gone. He’s the one who didn’t raise her from the dead. He’s the one who isn’t leaving her to go back seeking a semblance of normal life. He may be a vampire, but he’s not a fake, either, not monk-created for maximum emotional impact.
He’s her genuine last resort, and she won’t ever be able to forget that.
Tonight, though, he’s going to get Buffy Summers’ attention, and keep it. If it’s the last thing he does. If it brings his world crashing down around them. Tonight, Spike’s having her all to himself. Tomorrow can worry about tomorrow.
Assuming there is a tomorrow for him. It’ll be worth finding out.
