Why do we buy those plastic rice paddles? Wouldn't a big spoon work just as well?

The first step, once one has finished cooking a pot of rice, is to use the paddle to separate the sticky mass from the sides of the pot, as well as breaking any seal that may have formed on top and may be trapping a steam pocket. The technique for doing this is to thrust the paddle straight down the sides of the pot, moving around the edge.

tldr: The plastic paddle is just copied from a traditional wooden paddle that has the same shape for a reason.

Because the paddle comes free with the rice cooker. It's not like one actually pays money for the plastic rice paddle.

I think the rice paddle holds more, and it's easier to get the rice off, especially if it's glutinous. The wooden ones are at least pretty.
