heartbreak all around

My Mac Air crashed. Again. It happened in May and I had to have it wiped. They are clearing it again as I write.

GAH!

I still don't know what all I lost the first time. Luckily no writing. But there were pictures that are gone forever now. This time I hadn't saved much on the hard drive, except for a very productive day's worth of revising which has ( Read more... )

My mom said that when I left for school, it was exciting and not that sad (although we're very close now, we weren't that close when I was a teen). But when my brother left, she said it was almost like a death -- she had to really work through some serious grief (they were obviously very close then, but now I'm much closer to her than he is -- though he tries).

That's interesting, Robin. I think having her leave right after high school wouldn't have been so hard, we were always butting heads. We've gotten over that now that she's responsible for herself. Maturity, I guess.

That Mac thing sounds like it's a real hardware problem. I've had two, an iBook and a MacBook, over the past 6 years and no problems whatsoever. That's discouraging.

The iBook's still running, though the battery is an issue (as it would be after 6 years) -- I gave it to my sister in law when I upgraded, since she was bound for school.

For online backup, I recommend DropBox. And I always upload any substantial bit of writing (chapters, scenes, etc) up to Google Docs. Good, 'cause I can access them anywhere.

*hugs lots and lots and lots and lots*

Love you!

I offer my sincere commiserations on your crash!!! I dropped a laptop and lost two years work because I didn't back it up (because it was old and the process was complicated and confusing so I left it) and then because I'm idiot and never learn, I had my PC's hard drive fried a month or two later and lost almost everything I'd written up to that point because I hadn't bothered to save any of it either. That was HELL! But I rewrote everything I lost. In the end the crashes were awful blessings. My books were so much better the second time round. :/

As for losing your lovely daughter, you'll never lose her! I could see in her face when she looked at you that she adores you. You're such a good mother.
