I've read both Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion twice. I seldom read science fiction anymore, but to me this is about a great as the field gets. The conclusion Sol Weintraub, the Jewish academic, comes to in Book Two of his relationship with "god" still resonates with me today. I'm not a fan of religious themes. This one was rather brilliant!
I liked The Detective's Tale. It's a tongue-in-cheek parody on Raymond Chandler's The Long Goodbye. Keeps the series from being overly heavy handed. It's Simmons' way of winking at genre, I think. *g*
I've read the Long Goodbye, but TDT still didn't quite click with me. That said, I did think the rest of the book was pretty damn brilliant, and I don't dare use that word lightly.
I have Fall of Hyperion sitting right here on CD, but I've noticed that if I listen to audio books during my commute, I don't seem to write on my novel at lunch. Not sure why. But right now I'd rather write, even if the book is as good as I think it will be.
