Tonight I saw The Lives of Others with Martha and her two friends. This is the movie, if you were watching the Academy Awards, that surprisingly beat out Pan's Labyrinth for the best foreign film Oscar. About a bunch of German people being all Germanic in East Germany

the accents probably vary because germany only became germany rather late in history (1870) and existed as a city states -- each with a distinct accent or dialect as a matter of regional pride.
