I've lost count of how many people I know that have been to/are in Iraq and Afghanistan. Like you said, it's quite depressing. As long as they keep coming back...

The survival kit you put together sounds awesome. Putting together my care packages for the troops was my favorite part of the holiday season. Doing the shopping, fighting to get everything in the box, even filling out the customs paperwork. It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy that things will be a little happier for them when they get it, at least for a little bit. I'm sure your co-worker appreciated and it's nice to see/hear about someone else putting things together as well. :-)
