Ficlet: Smile

May 27, 2008 23:40

I had to take a break from work, so I distrated myself with this little ficlet/drabble (wendymr I can't remember what's what!) based off the trailer for the second half of the series of DW. 319 words, un-beta'd, appropriate for all. Oh, and Spoilerific if you haven't seen this series or specifically the new trailer.

Part of him doesn’t want it. He doesn’t want the wounds opened, doesn’t want the expectations their goodbye will likely dredge up and doesn’t want to know if her life hasn’t been fantastic and brilliant and wonderful. It’s not fair. To hell with worrying about being selfish. He doesn’t want to say goodbye a second time, and he'll have to. That much is certain.

Oh, that I can so believe. Of course he'd be thinking of all those things, especially about not wanting to know if her life's not been 'fantastic and brilliant and wonderful'. He's seen Sarah-Jane (apparently) missing him for years, after all, and he's seen the effect on Jack of travelling with him. He's seen, too, what being with him did to Martha and her family. If Rose, too, is scarred that's going to be so hard for him.

But then:
And then a whisper of memory brings her scent to mind, the way her hand felt in his, and the smile of a girl who’d given him comfort when he’d lost all hope.

Yes :)

Really, really nice little fic!

Aw, thank you, love!!! That little bit struck me so deeply, especially the look on his face before he smiled. Thanks for the awesome feedback!

This is gorgeous. I'm sure I could read it again and again and still see new things to love about it. How perfectly you capture all the complicated, warring feelings behind that moment of hesitation and then the smile.

And then a whisper of memory brings her scent to mind, the way her hand felt in his, and the smile of a girl who’d given him comfort when he’d lost all hope..

I love that conflict between fear and joy and the way he finally comes down on the positive side; it captures the hope that I still believe is at the heart of the DW story - that even if pain follows, it is worth it for the moments of happiness.

Thank you so much!!! Our Doctor is definitely a complicated man, and one afraid of being happy. He knows that life, the universe, time, they're all cruel mistresses and happiness is fleeting, hence his tendency to shy away from it. At least that's my take. Glad you enjoyed it!

Have I mentioned at all how bloody much I missed you?

No, I don't think you have. If you really wanted to express it, you could hop a jet over. *g*

I've missed your writing! This is very good. I don't follow DW, but you don't really need to to appreciate what's going on in this story. You've captured the emotions of the moment beautifully.

Wow, thank you so much!!! It's good to flex the old writing muscles a bit, and a good "reward" for myself once I get work done. :)
