wook77Wook: Welcome to the LGBT News segment for Slashcast Episode 25, I’m Wook77 and it was a busy month for LGBT news so I’m just going to hit a few highlights.
A ruling handed down by California’s highest court means that the sponsors behind Proposition 8 can defend the anti-equality proposition even though the government or the state of California refuse to defend it. I’m torn on this news because I’d rather see equality quickly than not, but this way at least we can get a ruling on the legality of these amendments banning marriage equality. I’m certain we’ll all be keeping our eyes on this as it winds its way to the Supreme Court.
In Russia there is currently a law being proposed that prohibits the distribution of so-called gay propaganda to minorities, with punishment ranging through fines and possible jail time. It’s a new take on the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bills currently being proposed all over the US. I’m boggled as to why the State Department of the US is willing to take Russia to task for this, but our own federal government isn’t willing to take our own states to task for similar bills.
In a modern day witch hunt Kevin Hogan, a decorated rowing coach and English teacher with over twenty years of celebrated experience, is currently facing losing his teaching credentials and his job for appearing in gay porn many, many years ago. This isn’t the first case of a teacher losing his credentials for things he did when in college. While parents might be outraged Mr. Hogan’s students are standing up in defence of him, showing to me that the younger generations do get it, and giving me hope that homophobia might just die out.
Barney Frank is retiring from public service, though his history in Congress is mixed, the man has never lied about his sexuality and has been an outspoken for LGBT equality. I’m hopeful that somebody will step into this void.
Benetton has pissed off The Vatican by photoshopping a kiss between The Pope and Sheik al-Tayeb, and if I’ve mispronounced his name I’m very sorry. The Vatican threatened legal action, prompting Benetton to pull the ad that they allege was made to promote unhate.
Finally on World AIDS day, and whenever you suspect that you are positive, and even if you don’t suspect that you are positive, I urge you to get tested. There are plenty of places that test for free, so not having the money is no excuse.
And that’s it for Episode 25’s highlight reel of LGBT news.
