I completely agree with you! It was discipline, not abuse. I was spanked as a child a few times when I did things that were wrong. Do I think I was abused, no. I know I was being disciplined for doing what I did. (And I was spanked by my ex-basketball playing father, so it's not like they were wimpy spanks.)
Personally, I think there needs to be more discipline. It seems parents these days are too concerned making their children happy, and they turn their kids into spoiled rotten brats who feel they can just walk all over their parents.
I've also heard the argument that discipline isn't the answer, but expressions of love. I wish I could remember how exactly you'd correct the child through love, but the person that gave the argument lives in Sweden. In America, it seems to be an entirely different thing.
I never thought about discipline as having to be different between children - that some things would work, while others wouldn't. I like that concept :)
