Let me set the scene...
First, we have a member with almost no approvals in the Requiem venue, who comes up with a cool Devotion. The member puts it in the database, states explicitly that they are willing to compromise or change the Devotion if the Storytellers have any concerns at all. The Devotion is vaguely similar to an existing Devotion, with the exception that the new Devotion has significant differences, and isn't abusive (unlike the existing Devotion, which is pretty cheesy).
Now fast forward several months, as the member has compromised and discussed the application with local, domain, and regional level Storytellers. They have all expressed concerns, and the member has discussed the issue and made changes to accommodate their requests for changes. The Devotion is now very different from when it began, is even less powerful, and has been given a higher XP cost than anything in the game. The Devotion sits at Global level, waiting. Keep in mind this is months and months after the rule came down that any future Custom Devotions are banned from being entered into the database.
Now fast forward a month. No comments pop up, no concerns are expressed. The member waits patiently to hear from the Global STs, confident that any concerns can be discussed, debated, and worked out for the betterment of the application and the club.
Then, the MST comments: "Too similar to other Devotion" and hits DENIED. No discussion, no expressing concerns, and no possibility of ever re-applying.
Wow. Just wow.
I should state for the record that this member is not me, but is instead someone who I think just quit the Requiem venue over the laziness of the MST. When I heard this story, and confirmed it, I was stunned. The Global Storyteller just took the kind of behavior we try to encourage and cultivate in our membership, and shot it in the face.
I'm really trying to figure out why I still participate in this club. I'm having even more trouble determining what useful function is performed by the higher level officers in the club. Do we enjoy the Camarilla because of them, or in spite of them?
Let me be clear, there are some great folks in this club, and some great officers. This incident was just so blatantly lazy and dismissive, I'm having trouble finding the positive side of the organization right now. Do I really want to encourage this sort of behavior with my time and effort? I'm not sure I know the answer to that question right now.
