I read this intersting college guide while I was in France that talked about grade inflation in America. Apparently this started back in Vietnam when professors realized that if a male student failed out college, they would likely be sending them into war. So where a student deserved a F, they were more likely to give them a C- or a D+ which of course shifted the entire scale upward. This didnt end after Vietnam however, becuase people got used to this inflated scale. When you complicate that with the fact that students pull the "If I don't get a 3.0 I will lose my scholarship" and the fact that teahers may be afraid of getting out bad grades for fear of getting bad evaluations, grade inflation is rampant.
