If you can guilt him into paying to get it fixed there is this place called dr-riki's which does guitar restorations and fixes. My mate Dave used them to fix up his old ibanez, and I think he was pretty happy afterwards.

he would probably say no, but then you can tell all your family what happened and maybe cry a bit, and then they will all make him feel bad.
