I awoke this morning with a sudden urge to watch the Fellowship of the Ring. I did not know particularly why, but I grabbed the extended edition and popped it into the player, and watched it while eating my breakfast of black beans and scrambled eggs ( Read more... )

Yeah me too, though I would imagine that we are going about things a bit differently in terms of how we treat the end user. But I'm also talking about your day to day life stuff.. In terms of wasted electricity, water, food, where you get your food and clothes, how that affects others... so on and so forth.

I'm recycling more, and I am rethinking prices of goods. I am getting more and more into the mindset of "is this the real price of this item or am I using somebody/something" organic food is not overpriced, mainstream food is underpriced. I think about fairness in what I buy and otherwise consume ( ... )

"mainstream food is underpriced" is an excellent way of putting it. It reminds me of hearing about how stores would harm themselves for the opportunity to utterly undermine a competitor, or a source they no longer liked.

But urm... Should I give applause? I guess I was more of looking for this post to stimulate thought in typical individuals, rather than pro-active ones like yourself =)

Your closing line sums it up, seriously.

Mainstream= multinational cruelty based enterprise.

well you did ask "What are you doing with your time?" I am doing at least some good with it and I wanted to share that. Sort of saying "wow I am not alone, there are others working towards that mindset".

I am not looking for applause, I am sorry you felt I was

Amen.

To clarify, I did not feel that you were looking for applause, but what you said was worthy of applause - and I am bad at doing such, hence, awkward, and thus this terribly formed sentence!

I actually had a brief conversation about this with Aunt Clare - and she was surprisingly discouraging of it, in some ways... However, I take everything she says with a grain of salt, such as her consistent attacks on my faith (I get about 2 each time I see her, which isn't very rare due to proximity and campus events). Nonetheless, I do want that life quite deeply, and it wasn't until I realized such that I had a face for my own depression. This is part of why I want to move to Oregon, aside from it being a central location/desired place for everyone involved with AGOKS, LordHavoc, the DarkPlaces author lives there, and when he isn't coding, he is farming on his family's land. I mentioned to him Cate and I visiting sometime to lend a hand for the sake of experience and he said it would be very much appreciated ( ... )

Take a look at that, might not be what you're thinking of, but its still quite cool... And closer to what I aspire to.

I'm sitting in history class reading this, watching the teacher write science and religion on the board, then have a long line down the board between... what a great way to say that everything that is associated with social morality is also related with creationism... I digress.

As I read that, I thought about bandwidth, power consumption, and my hard drive. Perhaps the arguments about clutter can also be made on a virtual level... but I couldn't escape the thought that whatever I delete is just for the room to get more at a later date. Same thing with real clutter - getting rid of stuff doesn't equate lite living, it just makes room for more crap. Moving lightly will come in handy for the move though :)

There isn't much in the way of social morality in terms of people's every day behavior... Then again, read some political scientists, they think that human rights have failed because it can be seen as tied to a religion - which can be objected to with relativism... Talk about shooting yourself in the foot ( ... )

I've always thought the same thing...something a bit like what they did in The Village, except you weren't forced to stay if you didn't want to. We had a big long discussion about it on the Enix forums, so I'm definitely far from alone.

Of course, I'd probably miss electricity, but there's really nothing stopping you from making a self-contained solar powered community if push comes to shove.

I think it could easily happen - because it is still physically feasible, and... as you said, far from alone. If you can get a decent number of people together, then its harder for outside pressure to cave in that system of sustainability ( ... )

The only hard part would be getting the government to go along with it...it would be slightly difficult for a self-contained community to raise US dollars ;) Unless we had some sort of sponsor or something...hmm...

Also, yeah, definitely wouldn't be able to go it alone...there's no way I could ever chop up and prepare some tasty animals =( I could totally learn to grow veggies, though. I've always wanted to grow my own mustard plants and make homemade mustard =D

In terms of raising the money, selling excess and such to the outside world... One can look at the Quakers a little bit (no, not us, the ones without rocket launchers) and see how they do it - though they do get away with being classified as a religious enclave iirc, so that gives them much stronger leeway from the government. I think a big thing will be getting it strongly knit enough as a whole, to stand against those who would seek to seize our lands and thus lifestyle through eminent domain, or some other antidemocratic piece of legislation ( ... )
