recommend me

i desire and require that you give me book recommendations! i know that most of you read and i trust the taste of nearly all of you! everyone had better pony up at least one. i don't care what it's about as long as it's good, defined as "you enjoyed it."

thank you and goodnight!

"Bastard Out of Carolina" by Dorothy Allison. It's a little distressing at times, but it's honestly one of the best books I've ever read, and it was a really quick read because it drew me in so much.

I didn't like "Trash" as much, sadly. But this one is definitely tops.

Wasted by Marya Hornbacher. I'm rereading it for the umpteenth time instead of studying Victorian Lit. It's fabulous.

OBVIOUSLY you are not in the small group whose taste i don't care for. you're like... the improved and more exciting version of me.

i haven't read the mysteries of pittsburgh, but kavalier and clay was kick ass.
i think i tried to read the cider house rules and didn't get very far, but i am not anti-irving and i've read a couple of his other books a couple of years ago. didn't get to a prayer for owen meany but that was a function of time. the not getting very far on the cider house rules may have had to do with the fact that the book didn't belong to me.

I'm with Naomi on the John Irving bandwagon...other favorites include The Fourth Hand and The Hotel New Hampshire.
Wally Lamb is also fun - She's Come Undone, I Know This Much Is True
Anne Marie MacDonald - Fall On Your Knees
anything by Anita Shreve, particularly The Last Time They Met, All He Ever Wanted, and Seaglass

squares! the best of the christmas deserts (after christmas ice cream, of course).

she came to my school to read from her new book and then sign other books, which took all of two hours. all of two hours that i was in class writing an exam! i ran to the theatre where this shenanigan was supposed to be held, and burst through the doors in a dramatic entrance full of gasping for breath and coat and backpack swinging.

i found myself quite alone, for everyone had gone home and now my book is unsigned.

but! i found a signed copy of my favourite book in the whole entire world, sitting on a shelf in a second hand bookstore in ireland, so i have that instead.

yes! i read the fourth hand a couple of years ago, my roommate had it! it was great!

i am concerned about anne-marie macdonald and anita shreve because they look very girly. i don't do very well with a certain kind of lady book. that is why i have not read these ones. but i might be wrong! i haven't looked closely enough to have a valid opinion!
