Rockman Drabbles Collection: 2 - Fading Memories

---

He jerked himself awake as his internal clock blared out the time. 8:00 A.M. Time to wake Netto up for school. He shook himself free of the clutches of the horrible nightmare. He was sure that if navis could sweat, then he would’ve been drenched. But there was no time to ponder his dream. He had a stubborn net op(1) to wake.

Rockman took a huge breath - which was totally unnecessary, but he liked the action; it made him feel more human - and shouted in a loud voice, “NETTO-KUN!!! TIME TO WAKE UP!!!” As he had expected, the chesnut-haired boy only twitched on his bed, completely oblivious to his navi’s, and continued to sleep. The blue navi, however, was very persistent, and thirty minutes of non-stopped yelling later - net navis didn’t need air, after all -, a disoriented Netto finally woke up.

As usual, the boy freaked out over the time, blaming it all on Rockman. And, as usual, Rockman explained that he had been trying to wake him up for the past thirty minutes and lectured him on the consequences of staying up ‘til 3 in the morning playing the new video game that had just came out. And, as usual, Netto was late to class.

Rockman finally had some time to himself as his net op settled down for class, mumbling over the unfairness of it all. By this time, however, the dream had already started to fade from his mind, details getting blurry and hazy. All he could remember was the feeling of pain in his lungs, the frantic but slowing beating of his heart, the sense of desperation and confusion, the sight of a brown-eyed woman and man in tears, and the cries of a child. But that couldn’t be. Navis didn’t have lungs, couldn’t feel pain in their chest, because it would mean that they were being deleted. The people in his dreams seemed familiar, like he should know their names. It was right on the tip of his tongue… until Netto yelled into his PET.

“Hey, Rockman! Me and Dekao are going to the battle arcade! You in?”

“’Dekao and I’, Netto,” he corrected his net op, “And sure.”

The dream settled into the back of his mind, forgotten at the moment, yet constantly nagging at his thoughts. Why? It was just a dream… wasn’t it?

(1) - Net op: Net Operator. Net Battler. Whatever. Not sure if that’s what they really call it, but that’s what I’m using. I think I read that somewhere in a fanfic…

A/N: the dream is Rockman’s last human memories as Hikari Saito, Netto’s twin brother that died shortly after birth of HBD, a heart condition with no known cure. Their father had graphed Saito’s soul into a navi’s body just in time for Netto’s tenth -I think- birthday, and had given him to Netto as a birthday present. I believe that Rockman had no memory of his past life, given the short time he had been alive anyways, and the fact that he is now a net navi, but if that isn’t true, then that is what happened in my fic.

so… another drabble, it seems like I can’t write anything long for this fandom >.<… Rockman EXE is actually the first anime/manga I have come in contact with, and it remains #1 in my heart <3 maybe that’s why I am unable to write a lengthy fic, ‘cause I’m afraid I’ll ruin the series in my mind with my writing skills? A psychological thing, perhaps? Whatever it is, hope you still like my short drabbles! No? Too bad, ‘cause there’s more coming.
