"I knew you'd be here. Tsunade's looking for you."

The blond nodded his head slightly in acknowledgement of the words spoken, the movement almost missed by Sasuke, but didn't move from his perch. Naruto didn't appear surprised at the sudden appearance. Then again, he had watched Sasuke as he had went through the whole town, stopping by the places he frequented - Ichiraku Ramen, his apartment, Sakura's house, the hospital, the Hokage Tower, the park; it wasn't hard to come to the conclusion that the Uchiha was trying to find him.

Sasuke scowled. "Are you deaf? I said the Hokage is looking for you."

"I heard you. I just chose not to reply or take action," Naruto responded.

The raven frowned. Naruto seemed more subdued and, dare he say it, depressed as of late. The quietness from the blond was a source of concern, but Sasuke had never been much of a talker and couldn't find the words to coax answers out of the emotional man. Seeing as he had nothing else to do - nothing important, anyways - Sasuke decided to keep Naruto company and sat down next to him. And maybe the words would suddenly come to him and he could finally find out what was wrong with his friend. Right. Besides, his task was technically over, so he had every right to relax. Afterall, he was only sent to deliver the message; whether or not Naruto responded to the summons was not his responsibility.

However, any effort at questioning the blond was soon forgotten. He didn't know how to describe it, but time... seemed to flow differently when they were alone. Hours felt like minutes, and it wasn't until the sun began to set that Sasuke realized that he had been sitting with Naruto on the Hokage Mountain for close to five hours. The blond's company had been... nice. Though not a word was exchanged, the silence was comfortable, not at all awkward like he'd thought it would be.

"Isn't it pretty?" Naruto's words - quiet and filled with awe - interrupted his thoughts, and for the first time, Sasuke truly looked at the village. The setting sun painted the sky a myriad of reds and purples, casting a warm glow on all of the daily activities going on below them. People working and smiling as they talked to friends and customers, children laughing as they ran through the streets with their friends, ninja's relaxing and patting each other on the backs for a job well done, it was the perfect picture of a peaceful village in the peak of prosperity.

"This would be the first time I've ever thought of Konoha as pretty, but yes, I suppose it is," Sasuke said wryly.

A soft wistful smile appeared on Naruto's face. "It's sad, to know that I'll never belong here."

The words were shocking, especially since they came out of Naruto's mouth. Naruto, the most confident - almost to the point of being cocky - and optimistic person he's ever known. "What do you mean?"

"Look at their faces, Sasuke," he said, voice filled with sadness. "They look so happy. But when they see me, their face twists into a frown, and their eyes turn cold. They'll never accept me, because of what I hold." The blond held a hand to his stomach. "This place is my favourite spot in Konoha."

"Why?"

"I like the scenery," Naruto gave him a cheeky smile. But Sasuke wasn't deaf, he could hear the whispered words:

"I wonder who would care if I jumped off this cliff?"

Sasuke was struck by how the light cast a reddish glow on Naruto's features, highlighting the gauntness of his face and the insecurity and stress in the blue eyes that he never noticed. The realization that the blond wasn't as infallible as he - no, as everyone - thought was a scary one. Using his natural confidence to inspire hope in the most cynical of people, no one ever thought Naruto could also be using it to hide self-doubts from others. Sasuke was hit with a sudden need to protect the blond, to make sure that nothing will ever cause him to think about taking his own life. And there was only one way he knew how to comfort Naruto: with insults.

"I'd catch you before you fall; god knows you need to save whatever brain cells you still have."

The light in those eyes was dim, but the spark he encouraged would slowly grow to the burning flame it had been before, he knew it. Naruto mock-growled in response to Sasuke's words. "You teme! Are you calling me stupid?!"

Sasuke ignored him and set into a thinking pose. "Well, I guess I don't even need to be good at catching; afterall, there's so much of you that I'm sure it won't be a problem," he said, tapping his chin thoughtfully.

"You bastard! I'm not fat! Hey, you come right back here- DON'T WALK AWAY FROM ME! THIS IS MUSCLE GODDAMNIT! MUSCLE!!" The blond screamed as he ran to catch up with the raven who was already half-way down the Hokage Mountain, arguing playfully.

It's a start.
