First of all, I'd like to say that those affected by the VT shootings have my deepest sympathies. But what nobody noticed while the major news outlets were busy overreporting the shooting was that the US supreme court made a ruling today which banned a very specific kind of late-term abortion called an IDX or a D&X which is normally used for ( Read more... )

I always do my best to keep up on the news, even during exam weeks. Whenever there is a major trajedy like this, I do recognize it as a very serious event which is worth reporting a great deal about - but I always do wonder what else happened that day.

Thank you for bringing this to our collective attentions.

I am not surprised to hear this. About a year ago - perhaps two, I'm not certain - a friend pointed out to me a program laid out by the FDA that essentially told doctors to look out for women's "preconception health". Which basically means, hey, let's treat every woman in the country as a potential mother and berate them for lifestyle choices that aren't fetus-friendly. (I'll have to try and look up that particular link; I'm on my new computer, and, unfortunately, all my bookmarks are gone'd.)

That assumption that women should be treated exclusively as mothers-to-be, coupled with this, makes me seriously fear for women's rights. While I never advocate abortion as a method of birth control, I think the choice to have a safe medical procedure in cases of extenuating circumstances is, well, the right thing to do.

Thanks for posting about this.

Here is the Washington post article about the CDC idiocy asshattery guidelines, and here is an interesting analysis of the same. That whole discourse of pre-pregnancy creeps me the hell out - what a warped way of looking at women...

Yeah~! That's the exact article. Thanks :D

Either way. It's scary as all hell. As much as I hate Harper, he ain't Bush...

Makes me very, very glad we live in Canada. I always did wonder what Partial Birth abortion meant. Thanks for the update, Mote. This makes me fear for the US all the more.
