The Piano
Beautiful, beautiful movie. Wonderfully acted, amazing music, great story. Holly Hunter is a mute woman whose only love is for her young daughter, Flora played by a young Anna Paquin (who I love), and her precious piano. She is arranged to marry a man by the name of Stewart (Sam Neill) and moves to New Zealand to live with him. Her piano is left on a beach when they arrive, and after she asks Stewart's friend and neighbor George (Harvey Keitel) for help, he takes them back to the beach. But then he takes her piano into his home, and she is to give him piano lessons in order to earn her piano back. But the catch is he doesn't really want piano lessons. He wants a meaningful relationship with Ada, and she is afraid of him and she doesn't know what to do. Stuff happens, and the story evolves most beautifully. The music is all instrumental, and mostly on the piano (as you might have guessed) which is a beautiful and bewitching element in the movie. The idea of deception at the cost of true love is unbearably delicious. The passion and the understanding between George and Ada is something that everyone can relate to, because we all want it so badly. When I first saw this, I was a little skeptical of seeing Harvey Keitel portray this wonderful character, as I remember him from such films as Sister Act and Little Nicky, where he played a gangster and Satan. But in this role, it just made me realize how many actors are willing to bend in order to widen their acting careers. Such a great movie, and if you want to, you can come over and watch it! I actually haven't got it yet, but soon!

Pumpkin
A movie about a soroity girl who seems to have a perfect life, having great friends, being at a great school, and having a tennis star boyfriend. All this changes when she meets Pumpkin. Christina Ricci is absolutely true and beautiful in this film. She plays Carolyn who falls in love with a disabled young man by the name of Pumpkin. At first, she wants nothing to do with him, because she can't stand the fact that his life is not perfect as hers is, and she feels sorry for the pain he has to endure. But soon, once she gets to know him better, sees him as a human being, and understands his pain, friendship blooms, as well as romance. Too bad no one else sees eye to eye with Carolyn. No one approves of this relationship because it seems so unorthodox. That's why I think this film has a great, strong message about relationships today. It doesn't matter if the person is gay, disabled, a transvestite, or a different race; as long as you love them for who they are and not what they are labled as, love can be shared with anyone. A good movie. I shall be looking for this one too.

So those are the two movies I'm in love with right now. And it doesn't hurt that they both made me cry. I'm such a sucker for tear-jerkers.

xx
