I have decided that it's a good time to reflect on my life, and where I want it go, and where I've been, as I've been living in the moment for a very long time now and I'm just slowing down. And what better way to do this than via a
good, old-fashioned LJ quiz?
1.What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Stopped being a teenager, dropped out of university. I've weeded most of the bad stuff out of life, or the stuff that was getting me nowhere, and that really bloody needed to be done but now I need to start filling my life with stuff that gives me a direction, or even just positivity. Stop concentrating on the negative, I guess. Yeah. Onward and upward.
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I can't actually remember my resolutions from last year. I am making some more though, and at some point in the next few days I will detail how I'm going to go about them.
1. Revamp my wardrobe. NOBODY NEEDS THIS MANY PAIRS OF RED SHOES.
2. Stop living on the highs and the lows. Life has to even out at some point, and I know that while you're a teenager there's the hormones and the drama etc, but I'm bored of it. It feels weird to think of myself as being a teenager while all that drama was happening, because at the time it seemed all-encompassing. But I was. And I'm not even a year out of being a teenager. It's very true, what I wrote ages and ages ago, no matter how permanent something seems at the time, especially emotion, things will always always change.
3. Get some direction. Not sort out my entire career for the rest of my life, because that's unrealistic, but pick something to do and stick to it. Well, actually, I've already decided this. More on that later. I am determined that I'm going to do this. I think I'll be good at it, and I want to DO something. Like I said, the bad stuff-my mum, some old friends, some old boyfriends, university-has gone. It's time to fill in the gaps with the good.
4. Not give up on the stuff I like to do in my spare time. Like, I alreay started playing the violin again this year, which is great, but I'd like to visit more galleries, and go to the theatre some more, and start playing badminton again, and compile my list of films to see and books to read and do it. I never want to do these things but as soon as I do them I'm glad I did.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, but a surprising number of people I went to school with have had kids.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. I feel lucky to have known her, and so honoured that she chose to share her stories with me. And sad that I never said a proper goodbye.
5. What countries did you visit?
England. I was lame travel-wise this year.
6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
I'd like to be heading in a good direction. Be on the right path to a good career, with an end target in mind. More self-awareness, and more discipline.
7. What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The 31st of May, as my big break-up of the year. The fourth of July, as my last night in the Egham house. The 18th of March.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
This is going to sound really lame, but I think it was either one of two things; dropping out of university, or breaking up with Steve. I'm glad I walked away from university. And with Steve, although I may not have done it for good reasons at the time (well, actually they were good, but they weren't the reasons that it wouldn't have worked out in the long term), I'm glad that I realised that things weren't working out and ended it even though I completely adored him, because the whole relationship was just so, so bad for me. I wouldn't have had the strength to do that a year ago.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Probably staying with Steve for so long. But I got out of it. I suppose it's strange, I feel odd about this year because there's been so much bad stuff, but then I have to remember that the bad stuff has all gone.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not really.
11. What was the best thing you bought or was bought for you?
The Nina Ricci perfume or the Spanish horror DVD boxset I got for Christmas. The Spanish do horror, in their way, almost as well as the Japanese. Much more surreal.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My little brother, who pulled himself out of all the trouble he was in last year.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
A friend of mine who doesn't always know that no means no.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, cigarettes, alcohol, clothes, music. And I spent more on Christmas presents this year than ever before. The usual.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting the fundraising job.
16. What songs will always remind you of 2009?
All of Lady Gaga.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i) Happier or sadder? Technically I guess sadder-but in a happy way. Like, this time last year I was with Steve, who I adored, and I was at university, but neither of those things really made me happy, I just thought they did.
ii) Thinner or fatter? The same.
iii) Richer or poorer? About the same, maybe slightly richer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Dumping of useless boyfriends!
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Pining for unavailable guys :-P
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it with my Dad, then a few rather amusing hours with my mum and brother, then with Alex's family, and Dane, which was pretty special.
21. What was your favourite month of 2009?
December has been pretty good.
22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
I started falling...which has been...unexpected. To say the least. We shall see.
23. How many one night stands?
I can't remember.
24. What were your favourite TV programs?
Coronation Street, Peep Show, Being Erica, Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Romantics.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nah. I think I'm too chilled-out in general to hate people.
26. What was the best book you read?
The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets. It's so beautifully written, I want to step right into it.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Lady Gaga, without a doubt.
28. What did you want and get?
To get away from my mum, I suppose.
29. What did you want and not get?
A couple of books. Oh, and an earring stand. I NEED one SO MUCH!
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Oooooooooh...I can't choose. Paranormal Activity was pretty good.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 20, and we went to the pub. It was pretty low-key.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Less drama at home.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
A definite improvement!
34. What kept you sane?
Vicky, without a doubt. I owe her my peace of mind.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
David Tennant, as ever, and James McAvoy.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
It's really stupid...but the idea that Charles and Camilla could be King and Queen makes me feel disgusted with the Royal Family. Yeah, I don't do politics so much. OH! And the fact that President Sarkozy looks EXACTLY, but EXACTLY like Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast has amused me greatly.
37. Who did you miss?
That would be telling. I've never missed someone that much in my whole life. I ached.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
That would be telling, as he's probably reading this, and I don't wanna massage his ego. Waffle waffle. But Scott and Dave are pretty bloody amazing as well. Scott especially. You know when, as SOON as you meet someone, you think they're amazing? It was just like that.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Oh GOD, they're all cliches. Take life as it comes. Don't sweat the small stuff. Oh, and sometimes, denial is the only card you can play...and it's not always a bad thing.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
'A little voice inside my head said ''Don't look back, you can never look back'' '.
