how about Mozarts? Its now called the almond, but its rather nice, and has won awards for 4 years running. Its on woollaton street.

May be a good one to visit without my friend, or with my friend after the smoking ban as I notice they're non-smoking and she smokes more than anyone I've ever met :/ Thanks for the suggestion though

squeek is muchly seconded, it is awesome!

also cafe nomad on hucknall road is really good, tis also veggie ('world' cuisine, i think they call it - good variety of foods anyway) and very tasty. also quite cheap and you can bring your own wine :). might be a bit out of the way for you though as it's towards sherwood.

The alley Cafe is nice and all vegeterian and they have poetry nights!

You have reminded me I haven't been there for ages and I think I should - it's yummy. I think we're looking for something a little bit more restauranty though but thanks :)
