DWpalooza - Doctor Who and Dreamwidth

May 05, 2009 14:02

I have been swimming in DW - Doctor Who mostly and to a lesser extent Dreamwidth. I like Dreamwidth, I'm not 100% comfortable with it yet but it's the most viable LJ-alernative I've seen so I'm taking a wait and see approach. I have a perm acct. here so don't foresee leaving but I'm definitely keeping my options open and will try, at the very ( Read more... )

Okay, so maybe I exaggerated a little but you know what I'm talking about. You're talking about something in an audio or the new series and some minor fact from 1974 is pulled out and if you don't get it then you are dismissed. It's vexing.

And I read "Human Nature"! But in context of S3 and prior to wactching Seven. I'm going to re-read it once I have the Seven eps under my belt since I'll know I'll have a completely different perspective.

I really like Seven. He's wonderful with both Mel and Ace, too, which is really nice. He and Mel are completely adorable together, actually, which people forget because Ace is so kick-ass, but srsly, I think you'll like the Seven'n'Mel ones. His episodes are terribly eighties, of course, but often very good fun. I only have two left, been waiting to get the DVDs (Fenric and Survival ( ... )

I know NOTHING about Mel other than she ran off to be a space pirate and that sort of rocks even if it was, as I've heard, a bit WTF. But, I am starting at the beginning so now I'll know!

I did see Fenric and Survival (I needed a specific thing for the revised column) and I loved them both. I mean, on one level they are a bit cringe-worthy but Seven and Ace are just delighted with each other and I really like that vibe. But there are times when Seven practically purrs his words when speaking to her and I get a bit of head tilt. You know the one. ;)

Heck, there's been a new Hex audio out for around two weeks and I haven't even listened to it yet!

Was that "The Magic Mousetrap"? There's been a lot of comments on various threads which means it's either really good or a bit shit. I hope it's good! Fandom shouldn't make you mope.

And damn, you are growing a person and all that that entails, your brainpower is otherwise engaged. But if you ever follow my primrose path I'll be happy to enable.

Aaaaaaace. I love Seven, I love Ace, and I think you'll especially like it when you watch in order. (You didn't *start* with Ghost Light did you? Ack.) I have an Ace (wait, maybe a "Remembrance of the Daleks") picspam around her somewhere...

And have you seen Silver Nemesis yet? (!)

I listened to a few of the Eight & Lucie audios out of order, but recently I've started back and supplied myself to listen to them all in order. I'm about halfway through the second season, but the only 3rd season one I've been able to find is Orbis. I'll be there as soon as I find them, though. I'm glad to know I can talk to you about them!

Oh, darn, I used to have the best Ace icon...

I have NO Ace or Seven icons. A situation that must be rectified.

I have seen Silver Nemesis, Ghostlight (hee!), Survival and Fenric. Ghostlight was a huge ball of WTF and I'm hoping the DVD extras help make it clear.

I'm about halfway through the second season

Awesome! I am always available to talk Eight.

I think S2 had stronger stories, but suffered from a clear arc. I adored Max Warp and Grand Theft Cosmos. :D Season 3 has been interesting and it looks as if an arc will emerge which makes me happy.

I was asked to contribute two of my Enlightenment columns and to submit a third

VERY cool! Congratulations!

I like 7 in the audios better than on screen, personally, and Hex is wonderful. He's a good foil for Ace - as she's the Doctor's protegee, he's sort of hers.

I guess not a lot of people are listening

I'm horribly behind; at this point, I'm going to save the stories I haven't heard for something to listen to on the way to/from MediaWest. (And somehow I got it in my head there were only 4 stories, so I thought the season was "over." Apparently it's going to run until October!

If you find fandom shangri-la, do let me know; I'll join you. However, it seems like there's really the same issue expressed differently - either "you like the character I like or I judge you" or "you prize the trivia I prize or I judge you." (The answer to the boys club, by the way, is "Even the show writers say there's no solid canon.")

Thanks. It is a bit cool, actually. :D

I can understand that. I've hoarded the audios for long plane trips but with this series I'm trying to enjoy the in the spirit in which they're released. New Who every week! It's lovely. Plus there will be a Christmas episode. I'm filled with glee.

I'll keep you posted on the shangri-la. I think it's rarer than pink unicorns. Oh well.

As for judgement - it's judgment coupled with dismissal that bothers me. I don't care what someone else values, it's the dismissal of people who don't value the same thing that gets under my skin. You're immediately marginalized because you don't subscribe to the same world view. We've all got our own quirks, lord knows I've got my own toolbox of trivia, but that doesn't mean I dismiss someone as irrelevant because they don't pack the same baggage.

It's vexing.

I know! I'm totally looking forward to that. I like Lucie.

It's vexing.

Vexing's a good word. Also immature, and narrowminded, and a bunch of other ones...
