Re: book recs, try Smilla's Sense of Snow, or Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow as it's known in some translations. It's been my favourite novel for a long while, but come to think of it now, there are quite a few similarities between Smilla and Sherlock. I also love the Burke Series by Andrew Vachss.
