Social Security Fairness Petition Act (CA)

I am no longer a CA voter but I would like to ask any Californian reading this to consider signing this petition. It would benefit people working in education who now pay into the Teachers' Retirement System. If the have also paid into Social Security their SS benefits are currently reduced or eliminated if they are receiving TRS benefits. ( Read more... )

How can they lose it? I'm confused 'cause this is new to me.
Does what they *had* in S.S. get transferred?
I mean, it sounds like teachers who're in TRS are now paying into a smaller group than S.S., which would mean they'd get less benefits from it, y/n?

Again, I wonder why teachers are gettin dinged for making the decision to teach, it seems like the reverse ought to be true.

[These provisions are supposed to stop double dipping but they hurt people who pay into SS for a number of years and then become teachers. These teachers don't get what they pay in, therefore greatly reducing their retirement benefits ( ... )
