I'm honestly not certain which I prefer: up to months at sea with no stops, or small journeys frequently interrupted and ended by a number of stops at port. The last few weeks have been riddled with the latter, and I'm surprised to say I may be missing the former. Such is the lack of purpose news and worthy destinations of late ( Read more... )

Cruelty to some is a matter of opinion. They have their standards while we have ours; I doubt that much will ever change.

I suppose you are correct in that, but they have no right to judge when they are guilty of far worse than what some in our profession have done.

Indeed it is. But at the same time, to remain still and immovable for such a long time would truly be a tragedy. Pirates were meant to roam and move about, after all.

I agree. But we do not make their laws or standards, just as they do not make ours. They try to enforce them on us, but refusing them is what makes us what we are; we're condemned because of it and, in turn, become inclined to hate them for the same reason, as they hate us for disobeying. It's a repeating pattern in which few on either side cross over to the other -- and, essentially, what makes us different.

True, that. I once heard that pirates are bred for the art of adventure and nobles for that of politics. Makes a man wonder what a half-breed between the two would be considered. And risk is really what our life is all about when one comes down to it.
