Before I use the Private setting to make journal entries that are not even for the eyes of my friends; can any of you reassure me that it does actually work, and that no-one can see them?

It does.

Custom groups also work, if you have a subset of friends you want to see something, but not others.

I think it does. However, depending on how much you trust your friends, the most simple way to check is to post a private post inviting comments from those who can see it.

Or to borrow ellistar's log in for a minute to check.

If you change your settings to those that you desire, then make your first post a Test and ask people if they can see it.

Aarrggh. Unfortunately this advice has buggered me up. I had poured a lot of stuff into a private post, and then before posting it I opened a separate window and did the test as advised. When I then went to post the main document it failed because I hadn't ticked backdated, and the whole thing was lost.

I really can't face doing it again. :o(

Arse. Sorry! I hate it when that happens.
