Characters: Bellatrix/Rodolphus, Sirius
As much as he wants to do this Muggle-style, Rodolphus won’t. He is a gentleman, even when he sometimes doesn’t want to be. If not for himself, then for her. This is what marriage is about.
He manages to get as close to Sirius as possible without actually touching. The two inches between them is a threatening one, and Sirius’s defiant stare does not disguise the way his back is pressed into the stone wall.
“Say it again,” Rodolphus dares him. Sirius is unperturbed.
“She’s a crazy bitch, Lestrange. But no one ever gets what they want in a marriage of convenience,” Sirius hisses. He takes a step forward, but Rodolphus forces him back up against the wall.
“You can say whatever you want about me. I will always be better than you, and we’ll both always know it, but I will not have you insulting my bride, nor my marriage. I can assure you, mutt, that this marriage is built on far more than convenience.”
Sirius growls low, and it is drowned out as the door opens and closes and the sound of tinkling merriment drifts out onto the street. Rodolphus straightens his dress robes and steps back, eyes flicking toward the noise.
Bellatrix is standing in the street. Her long black hair twists and tangles with the darkness of the sky, and her gown glows unnaturally beneath the street lamps.
“Darling?” she says softly, and Rodolphus steps toward her even as Sirius sinks farther into the shadows. “Is something wrong?”
Rodolphus takes her small hand in his and smiles at his bride. “Nothing, my dear. I was simply letting out the dog.”
Sirius growls again as the door shuts behind them. He slinks away through the dark streets as the newlyweds celebrate with their guests.
A marriage of convenience is all that they will ever be, Sirius is certain. But Rodolphus thinks otherwise. As far as he can tell, his wife is perfect, and a life devoted to caring for her is all he could ever ask for.
