In the end, Taisuke figured it began with the rumour.
I heard Johnny-san is planning for a debut, Kawai had whispered to him a week and a half ago.
A debut? he’d asked, and Kawai had nodded.
If you ask me, I think you guys would get it. Try your best to look good to him anyway, Johnny-san will probably debut a hard-working group that would sell well. Kawai paused, and then added as an afterthought, Also a group that won’t end up in the tabloids for the wrong reasons.
Taisuke frowned - he knew it was a good reason to carefully choose a group to debut, looking at past groups that had suffered scandals. But…
I’ll keep that in mind, he told Kawai, hiding his worries with a dry smile.
Work hard then, Kawai grinned, clapping him on the shoulder before strolling down the hallway back to his dressing-room.
Taisuke looked at his retreating back.
I will, he mumbled to nobody in particular.
~
It was, he decided, for the best.
It would definitely hurt him - hurt both of them - but the happiness of seven would be worth it.
Taisuke drew in a slow, long breath, closing his eyes, steeling himself.
It’s for our dream.
~
You’re avoiding me, Hiromitsu mumbled to him one afternoon during lunch break.
Am not, Taisuke replied, focusing on his onigiri instead of Hiromitsu’s face.
The silence stretched on, and when it was clear Taisuke was not going to reply he sighed softly, dragging himself away to lie down on the sofa.
Taisuke looked at his back, curled up on the old sofa, and looked away.
It’s for the best, he reminded himself.
~
They looked into each others’ eyes that night a week later, and somehow Taisuke knew - tonight was the night he’d end it all.
Hiromitsu’s eyes gazed into his, pleading silently - One more night, they seemed to be saying. Give me one last night.
His hands were engulfed by Hiromitsu’s, and a familiar pair of lips hovered above his for a brief moment.
Alright, Taisuke murmured in his mind, giving in. He tilted his head, and their lips met.
He’d make the most out of this one last night they shared.
~
Hours later, he lay curled up in Hiromitsu’s arms, feigning sleep.
He and Hiromitsu were always so close, and Taisuke knew Hiromitsu could always tell what he was thinking. They were old friends, best friends, and until now, something more…
Taisuke hoped that for the first time, Hiromitsu didn’t know what was on his mind.
It was for the best, that way.
He heard Hiromitsu shift, and a gentle hand brushed away his bangs. Taisuke’s eyes fluttered open to see Hiromitsu’s face, though his eyes were glazed, looking at something far away, far behind Taisuke.
Hiro? he whispered.
There was a pause, before Hiromitsu’s eyes refocused on him. Taisuke didn’t smile like he usually did when Hiromitsu spaced out - why would he, anyway? There was no reason to smile, tonight.
Stay, please, Hiromitsu’s gaze seemed to be pleading. Stay.
Taisuke bit his lip, ignoring the sadness welling up within him.
I’m sorry, he tried to convey with his eyes.
Around his neck, cold fingers clenched around something warm - a necklace Hiromitsu had given him long ago, when things were never as complicated as they were now.
He sat up, and held out his hand to Hiromitsu, dropping the white gold pendant softly into the opened palm. Slowly, Hiromitsu’s fingers closed over the star pendant, and he looked up at Taisuke again.
It’s always been our dream, Hiro, hasn’t it? Our dream as seven.
Taisuke couldn’t bring himself to say the words aloud.
He slipped off the bed, padding towards the door to slip on his shoes. Hiromitsu remained where he was, kneeling on the bed with a closed hand clutched to his chest, staring blankly into nothingness.
Goodbye, Hiro…
He gently closed the door.
~
He still loved Hiromitsu, that much he knew. He didn’t want it to end as much as the other, but…
Love couldn’t win every time, could it? Sometimes, sacrifices had to be made for the greater good.
Only when he felt something wet on his hands did he realise he was crying.
~
The manila envelope that had been delivered during the concert held within it all their dreams, all their hopes, all they could have asked for.
Taisuke could feel tears forming when he’d gone backstage, after the concert - they had achieved their dream, they could work hard together as seven…
He looked up to see Hiromitsu smiling at him.
We did it, he murmured, voice decidedly not as steady as usual.
Yeah, Hiromitsu said reassuringly. Tama-chan is in a state of shock, I think he’s bawling in the toilet right now.
Taisuke managed a wobbly smile.
I’m alright, he whispered.
Hiromitsu patted his head, fluffing up the perm.
It’s all for the best, Taisuke told himself again, over and over. It’s for the best, it’s for all of us.
We’re all alright, Hiromitsu said, grinning lopsidedly. We’ll always be alright.
end.
