Yamada leans against Keito as the two of them sit on the rooftop.
Neither says anything, content to just watch as the stars twinkle silently above.
“I think,” says Yamada suddenly, breaking the silence to say something that’s been weighing down on him for a while, “I should start exercising more.”
“Eh? What for?”
“I mean, just look at Ueda-senpai,” Yamada continues, as if Keito didn’t say anything, “he’s so toned! Apparently he boxes a lot and runs around the arena at tours when the other members do their solos.”
Keito raises an eyebrow, as Yamada continues his mini-rant.
“Maybe I should do that to. Like, run around lots at concerts and stuff. And maybe I should take up a sport seriously. Do you think it’s too late for me to start learning karate now? I remember when we were juniors Kyomoto did karate, and he’s really skinny. Or maybe I should take up boxing like Yamashita-senpai and Ueda-senpai. Or maybe perhaps-”
“Yama-chan,” Keito cuts in dryly, “what’s with this sudden need to exercise?”
Yamada stares at Keito in surprise.
“So I can lose weight.”
“Why do you want to lose weight?”
Yamada pouts, and reaches up to yank at his cheek.
“I’m too fat,” he says blithely.
“What?!”
“It’s true! I think I eat too much meat. Maybe I should go vegetarian?”
Keito groans, and smacks Yamada’s head playfully.
“Must I remind you that I’m much heavier than you?”
“You also happen to be way taller than me,” Yamada says patiently, “so it balances out. You’re tall and normal. I’m short and fat.”
In a sudden movement, Keito places both hands on Yamada’s shoulders.
“Yama-chan,” he says quietly, seriously, “what’s with this sudden obsession with body weight?”
“Well, ever since that Myojo shoot when they took down our weights-”
“The real reason, Yama-chan.”
Yamada averts his eyes and looks away.
“…You’ll laugh at me,” he says quietly, after a short pause.
Keito shakes his head.
“I won’t. Promise.”
There is silence for a while, as Yamada looks down at the floor, his knees suddenly much more interesting than anything else.
“Keito…” he says hesitantly, “why did you choose to date me, out of anyone in 7 or JUMP? Why me?”
“Yama-chan,” Keito starts, but is interrupted by Yamada.
“I mean, I’m short and dumpy. I look like a housewife from the 1970s living in…I don’t know, Okinawa or something. I eat like a pig, and I have a weird strawberry obsession.”
“But-”
“I think you should have dated someone else. Like Yuto, maybe. Then you’d have a much better boyfriend, who didn’t drain your wallet for strawberries and yakiniku. Yuto’s tall and slim, he’s cool, his smiles don’t look like constant grimaces, and he can play the drums!”
“Yama-chan,” Keito cuts in sternly, “what brought this on?”
Yamada looks slightly embarrassed.
“…Chinen called me fat,” he says in a small voice, “after they took our weights at the Myojo shoot.”
“Chinen’s bordering on anorexic,” says Keito dryly, “why are you even comparing to him? Besides, he’s tiny to boot.”
Yamada bites his lip, and Keito sighs, running a hand through his hair.
“Remind me to get Hikaru to torture Chinen with his bad jokes and failed pick-up lines later.”
Yamada’s lips twitch in a failed attempt to smile.
“Look, Yama-chan,” says Keito, “I don’t know how you became this insecure, but listen to me, okay? I don’t mind that you drain my wallet to buy food, and I don’t think you’re fat at all.”
“But I am!”
“No, you’re not,” Keito continues, “Besides, if you were taller and skinnier, and didn’t have your strawberry obsession, you wouldn’t be Yama-chan anymore, would you? You’d be Yuto, or Ryu. I don’t want that. The boy I chose to date is Yama-chan, and only Yama-chan. Sure, you may eat a lot, but I think it’s really endearing to see you smiling when we eat yakiniku.”
The frown on Yamada’s face lessens, just by a little.
“And I think your chubby cheeks are adorable.”
“They…are?” squeaks Yamada in surprise.
Keito nods.
“If they weren’t like this, I wouldn’t be able to do this, would I?”
He reaches out a hand, and pinches Yamada’s left cheek, earning a yelp from the shorter boy.
“Hey!”
“See? It’s a cute reaction. I like that about you.”
“R-really?”
“Yeah. I like you just the way you are, so there’s no need for you to change, okay?”
He envelops the shorter boy in a bony embrace, and smiles as Yamada slowly relaxes against him.
“Never let the words of others get to you again,” he whispers, and smiles and Yamada nods.
You are special.
There’s nobody else who’s exactly like you, there never was, and there never will be.
And that’s just the way I like it.
